Sewu Temple is Buddist temple around the Prambanan temple complex. Sewu is the Javanese word which means one thousand. So, sewu temples means one thousand temples. Yes, you can see these temples not far from Prambanan temples.
According to the legend, the whole temples are 999 temples and was made by Bandung Bondowoso within only one night. But he couldn’t able to made the last temple since the morning has come.
The sewu temple have brilliant architecture and spiritual surroundings it has also evolved as a tourist destination. According to the history, the sewu temple was made by the king Rakai Panangkaran (746 – 784) at Mataram kuno kingdom(ancient Mataram).
The sewu temple is the biggest buddist temple complex after the Borobudur temple. While Prambanan temple is Hindu.
The Sewu Temple is situated two kilometers from Prambanan Temple, nearing its north- eastern end. The fact that this temple was built near Prambanan Temple, which is a Hindu temple, indicated that the Hindus and Buddhists lived in harmony.
