The Exotic Temples around Prambanan

Visiting Yogyakarta will allow you to have a great chance to visit many interesting places as well as many exotic tempes. If you have visited Prambanan Temple, then it’s time for you to visit the other exotic temples around Prambanan.

Prambanan is the location of some of the earliest Buddhist temples in Indonesia. So, you better use your time wisely to visit these exotic temples. Here are the temples you can visit during your Prambanan tour:

1. Bubrah temple. You can find it not far to the north. This Buddhist temple still in ruins

2. Lumbung temple. Just go to the north and you will find it. This temple has Buddhist-style, consisting of one main temple surrounded by 16 smaller ones.

3. Sewu Temple. This temple is older than Loro Jonngrang. A main sanctuary surrounded by many smaller temples. Well preserved guardian statues, replicas of which stand in the central courtyard at the Jogja Kraton.

4. Plaosan temple. You can find it further east. This is Buddhist temple and it is probably built on 9th century.

5. Kalasan temple. This 8th century Buddhist temple built in commemoration of the marriage of a king and his princess bride, ornamented with finely carved reliefs. Just go to the west and you will find it.

6. Sambisari temple. Go further to the west and you will find the Sambisari temple. This was built in the 9th century. This Hindu temple was discovered in 1966. The temple was once buried 6,5 metres under volcanic ash. The main temple houses a linga and yoni, and the wall surround it displayed the images of Agastya, Durga, and Ganesha.

7. Ratu Boko. This is not a temple. This is the complex of fortified gates, bathing pools, and elevated walled stone enclosure, all located on top of the hill.

8. Sajiwan temple. This is Buddhist temple which was decorated with reliefs concerning education. The base and staircase are decorated with animal fables.

9. Banyunibo temple. This is a Buddhist temple with unique design of roof.

10. Barong temple. This is a Hindu temple complex with large stepped stone courtyard. The temple is located on the slope of the hill.

11. Ijo temple. This is a cluster of Hindu temple located near the top of Ijo hill. The main temple houses a large lingam and yoni.

12. Bugisa Statue. There are seven Buddha and bodhisattva statues, some collapsed, representing different poses and expressions.

13. Sari temple. This temple was built in the 8th century. The temple was once a sanctuary for Buddhist priests. There are nine stupas at the top with two rooms beneath; each believed to be places for priests to meditate.

14. Gebang temple. This is a small Hindu temple discovered in 1937 located near the Yogyakarta northern ring-road. The temple display the statue of Ganesha and interesting carving of faces on the roof section.

15. Gana temple. The temple is so rich in statues, bas-reliefs and sculpted stones. Frequent representations of children or dwarfs with raised hands. The temple is located in the middle of housing complex. The temple is under restoration since 1997.

16. Kedulan temple. The temple was discovered in 1994 by sand diggers, 4m deep. The square base of main temple is visible. Secondary temples not yet fully excavated.

You see that? There are sixteen great and precious places you can visit during your trip to Prambanan. So, do you have any reason not to see these exotic places directly? I don’t think so.
